We hit fifty. Fifty book reviews that is!

Woo hoo! Colorado Book Review just posted our fiftieth review since going online last fall. Thanks to the efforts of Tom Noel, Steve Grinstead, Kathleen Barlow, Dave Wetzel, and an array of reviewerssome of Colorado’s most interesting people and authoritative scholarswe reached a milestone. The Review, a partnership between History Colorado and CC&W, looks at nonfiction pertinent to Colorado. Make sure you check out our newest reviews.  Perhaps, former Governor Lamm’s review of The Blueprint: How the Democrats Won Colorado (and Why Republicans Everywhere Should Care). . .

We’re Ready For Our Close-up!

Check out our new films in the Short Documentary section of the CC&W website! These four short-films are the first in our series Out West: A History of Colorado, a collaboration between the CC&W and University of Colorado Denver College of Arts and Media. Our talented King Interns take you on a journey into Colorado’s recent history by exploring the Old Auraria neighborhood and Denver’s dying cemeteries.  They also sit down with some of Colorado’s first ladies and introduce you to our own Tom “Dr. Colorado" Noel.   Dr. Mary Somerville and Dean David Dynak were the executive producers of this video venture.

Learn About Colorado Artist Allen Tupper True

Read Tom Noel’s review of AllenTupper True: An American Artist in the Colorado Book Review section of the CC&W website and then check out the three-part exhibition of True’s work by the Denver Art Museum, Denver Public Library, and Colorado History Museum. In Allen True’s West each institution highlights a different form of the artist’s work: illustrations, easel paintings, and public murals. The exhibition runs through March 28, 2010, and will then travel to eight museums around the West.

Lucky Us

The support for CC&W continues to grow! We are fortunate to have David Wetzel donating his expertise to the center. He will be editing book reviews for our website. David worked as an editor for over twenty-six years before retiring as the chief editor and publications director for the Colorado Historical Society.  He has also written numerous publications, including I Looked in the Brook and Saw a Face: Images of Childhood in Early Colorado, a finalist for the Colorado Book Award in 2002.

Center Awarded $20,000 LSTA Grant

The Center for Colorado & the West at Auraria Library has received a $20,000 grant through the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) program administered by the Colorado State Library. The “Latinos in Colorado: Research Sources and Research Strategies” project will digitize a collection of images representing the experiences of Latinos in Colorado and produce an instructional video on Colorado history research methods and resources. Project activities involve students from UC Denver Public History, Preservation, and Colorado Studies and the College of Arts and Media working in partnership with Denver Public Library and the Auraria Library. The Kenneth King Foundation, another Center Partner, graciously provided a cash match for the LSTA grant.
